Washington, DC — Ward 1 neighbors packed Stratus Firm last night to officially kick off Brian Footer’s campaign for DC Council. Joined by supporters from across Park View, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, LeDroit Park, U Street, and beyond, Brian delivered a rousing speech pledging to “make Ward 1 one of the best places to live and do business in the city.”
“Everywhere I go in Ward 1, I hear the same thing: it’s getting harder to afford living in DC,” said Brian Footer. “Renters are facing rising costs, small businesses are fighting to stay open, and residents need to be and feel safer. We need fresh energy, bold ideas, action that delivers, and I’m ready to lead the way.”
A third-generation native of the DC area and three-term ANC Commissioner, Brian underscored his track record of turning community concerns into results — from launching the Safe at Home program at the DC Department of Aging and Community Living to fighting for safer streets, better parks, and accountable development as ANC Chair.
“Our vision is a Ward 1 where everyone belongs and everyone thrives,” said Campaign Chair Teresa Edmondson. “Seeing so many neighbors, from longtime residents and newcomers to small business owners come together at Stratus Firm was inspiring. We’ll keep showing up in every part of the ward to listen, organize, and deliver.”
Michael Wray, campaign treasurer, added: “Our campaign isn’t just building a budget — we’re building a movement. Brian’s deep roots in Ward 1 and his ability to listen first and deliver practical solutions are exactly what our neighborhoods need. Last night’s energy showed that people are ready for new leadership.”
In his remarks, Brian outlined three immediate priorities:
Housing: Build more homes, make them more affordable, and support renters who want to become homeowners.
Small Businesses: Make it easier for entrepreneurs and small businesses to get the licenses and permits they need, pay their people a living wage, and serve our community.
Public Safety: Ensure every neighbor not only is safe, but feels safe, thanks to both law enforcement and compassionate, long-term solutions that get people back on their feet.
Brian emphasized coalition-building and community voices as central to his campaign: “The best solutions come from the ground up. That is why this campaign is about bringing people together, listening, and building coalitions that deliver real results.”
The campaign will continue its outreach this fall with neighborhood listening sessions, small-business roundtables, and community forums.
